The Evans EQ4 bass drum head (batter side). Is there a better bass drum head in the world? These are selection of some Evans Heads' that I play.
The Hydraulics come in Glass, blue and Black. I have found that on all drums, these heads are the best. They take away all unwanted over tones and rings. They are perfect for entry level sets as well as high end.
A snare batter head with vents-truly amazing concept. The vents equally release the air thus reducing overtones and rings.

Screened Drum Educator

"WHAT IS LIVE SCREENED"?  Martin Fullard has  gone through a very thorough back ground check and screening process, which when working with children is very important as an Educator.

Incorporated into Martin Fullard's drum coaching is:
A love for drumming and all styles of music. There is no preference (unless specifically asked for by the client) toward one style of music. This way, the drummer becomes informed and has an all round knowledge of all styles of music.  Hence, all styles are coached by Martin Fullard.

Going from very basic, introduction, semi-basic, intermediate, advanced and super advanced. These levels are there to help your drumming goals get reached. Martin Fullard coaches several other drum teachers.

I will equip you with the tools that you'll need to be a drummer and belong to the family of percussion and ultimately for you to become a seasoned musician who is able to create drumming patterns straight from the soul.

As Martin Fullard is an official ProMark Stick Ed Endorser there is special attention given to correct stick technique and wrist movement and the various grips.  There is special focus on stick technique because Martin Fullard strongly believes that bad technique and no preparation (warm-ups) can lead to wrist pain and even more serious long term consequences. Bottom line- bed technique should be avoided at all cost.

There is focus on the fulcrum grip, the column and gravity leading to the Moeller technique (which Martin Fullard uses).  The Moeller technique is optional.  Even if you're not comfortable with Moeller, there is sticking that we can use that is painless, effective and has long term success!

I amstrongly against "the no pain, no gain" theory.  Wrists through good sticking technique and warm up exercises should not hurt. Wrists may hurt through bad sticking technique. Drumming is NOT about endurance.  Rarely are there "quick-fix" remedies.  One of the awesome things about drumming is its long term improvement through practice and encouragment. Wrists need to be trained in the correct way to hold sticks and bounce without hurting the wrists and exaggerating arm movement.  There is also correct sticking that can be incorporated into beats and fills, thus drastically improving stamina and performance.

CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME
Marty is committed to providing drummers with the correct tools to prevent Carpal Tunnel.  He is also committed to helping drummers new to his roster who suffer from it.

Other than stick grip..............

If you like, you can learn to sight read.  You can learn basic drum notation, intermediate or advanced drum notation.

Does everybody you teach sight read?

No, and I don't force people to. But on average, I would say 90% of the drummers I coach DO learn to sight read drum music at some point. It is kinda hard to miss it.

My son has a disability, what about him?

That is so awesome that he wants to play drums.  In the past I have worked with various drummers who have overcome different disabilities.  I encourage all peoples and love it when people who have "disabilities" turn them into "real opportunities" behind a drum set.  Hurdles are there to be cheerfully jumped over.

Do you play with drum sticks or brushes?  Absolutely both.  Inititially in the case of a new drummer, we do use drum sticks.  Long term we do work with ProMark brushes in our brush work. We get into latin, funk, punk and other styles. I am a huge fusion fan!  If there are styles that the individual is absolutely opposed too, then we won't do them, simple as that.

My daughter just wants to have fun and "bang" the drums with non of the fancy stuff?  That's fine too. You never know, over a period of time, she'll love drumming enough and slowly we can take it to the next level.

During our sessions:

You will learn to independently operate your hands and to be able to work both feet INDEPENDENTLY. Eventually, this 4-way independence will become a huge part of your drumming as will phrasing, ostinato and dynamics (among many other things). I encourage hi-hat pressing right from the get go.

If you are totally new to drumming you will learn about the individual drums, and how to set them up on your set.  This is good because over time, you will become confident on the setting them up/taking them down routine, as well as tuning. Imagine if you have to take your drums to the talent show at school? You'll learn about their roles in the percussion family and their notation on a staff. And yes! I'll show you what a staff is!

You will be able to successfully coordinate beats and fill-ins and develop a feel for where the 1st beat of a new measure falls ("the pocket"). You will be coached for playing to music, reading music and playing with other musicians. Eventually you'll learn to play by "feel" and finding the groove.  You will learn where the pocket is and how to get there.  Your built in click-track (metronome) will be working good.

If on your journey, you have picked up bad habits, they'll be taken care of and eliminated (so long as you really do want to change), so don't sweat it! You will be coached on correct stick technique, sticking, drum stick grips- the fundamentals, but also tuning, drum woods, correct hitting, dynamics and the importance of good drum sticks and good drum heads.  As I am mobile, I am able to explain the difference between drum heads on your individual set.
Being mobile is very cool because I get to see you play behind your set and how you have your set in positions that are very comfortable and accessable for you.

During a session, I will play your set (if needed), but only for as much is needed for the drummer to feel comfortable with the particular pattern or groove.  In other words "its not show-off time or ego boost".  I have found that drummers do play better behind their own sets and that it is far more beneficial for him/her to spend as much time behind their set as possible during a session.  It is really quite simple, drummers are more comfortable in their own environment playing their own drums that have been correctly tuned and tweeked. Bottom line is: just about any drum set can sound good with the right heads and correct tuning.  I also bring along H.Q practice pads and ProMark drum sticks.

You'll learn just about every single aspect of drum set playing and snare drum rudiments including the ability to use "the rudiments" as fill-ins.  Practical application of the rudiments is huge.  We cover all of the international drum rudiments    These rudiments can be seen on the PAS website. As part of a warm up routine we may go over open rolls like the "long roll", triple rolls and, or, the paradiddles in their various forms.  In "warm-ups", we always "open" before eventually "closing" or buzzing.  As ever, the structure is completely based upon the needs and requirements of the drummer.

If needed,
double bass drum technique.  If needed, you CAN learn specific songs that you've always wanted to play along to."The if needed" is very important because I will work with you on your individual strengths and weaknesses and requirements.

I coach drummers on a case-by-case level. No one size fits all.  All sessions are INDIVIDUAL and personalized.  That doesn't mean that there's no structure, there is, it's all done to meet the needs of the individual.

Is there an age limit? No. All ages are very welcome.  All levels, all communities.

Do you do speed metal?   Yes I do, many drummers that I work with are speed metal drummers. And I do love odd time.

"Martin Fullard's drum teaching method is practical, dynamic and assures quick results with a long term vision.  I can't believe the positive effect that he has had on my son and daughter.  I love the fact that he has been screened. I love that drumming has been such a positive and encouraging experience for them.  Martin's coaching technique is unique and very effective. He is patient, understanding and shows compassion in his style.  He is reliable and very committed. My children's self esteem is sky-high. We all feel like rock stars." (Laguna Beach).

"Martin is the man if you want to get good fast and have long term aspirations to play in a band.  I mean, 2 years ago I didn't know the difference between a snare drum and a rack tom. Now he's gotten me into Ostinato, poly rhythms, jazz, shuffles and brush work.  I know all about tuning and coated heads, I know what makes a drum set good (and bad).  I understand just how creative and personal drums are.  Before, I think I was a little like a robot." (Huntington Beach).

"Martin continually helps me with my grooves.  Myself and my band mates have noticed a huge difference in only a few months. I can tune drums now. I can postion microphones both on stage and in a studio. I understand why bass drum resonant heads should can be 'portholes'.  I now understand about 5/8, 7/8 and other odd time. I understand the importance of 'attack' and anticipation and "finding the 1".  I understand why Marty is a coach and not just another teacher, He is very different, way's different.  I realize that each transition in songs has to be smooth and perfect.  Martin has seen things in my drumming that I just didn't realize were there. He is very thorough." (Westminster).

"Other teachers I found used books that quite frankly bored me and left me frustrated.  Martin brings to the table a practical dimension that is more 'coaching', personal, yet challenging and really enjoyable."  Though he does go over music, I have found that his coaching style is different. It applies to me and my goals. I can understand why new drummers would be very comfortable with Martin and learn incredibly quickly, as well as the more seasoned pro. He is patient.  I can't believe how much more confident I've become.  Now I can rock out to my ipod and play along to my guitar play and bass player.  My drumming changed when I first took part in one of Martin's drum recitals.  I've never looked back." (San Clemente).

"I found with other drum teachers that they'd only teach me for half hour sessions, Martin teaches in hourly blocks.  Right from the get go your drumming is changed, you realize drumming isn't boring, you realize the practical element that he brings. I find his techniques easy to apply when I practise and work with bands. His indepth knowledge is incredible."  (Irvine)

"The fact that he comes to my house is awesome and very convienient.  I don't have to keep wasting time rearranging stands every time I played somebody else's set.  When I used to visit other drum teachers espcially in music shops the first ten minute were wasted on me trying to get comfortable on their set. Now,my drums are set up for me, just the way I like them and that's the way it stays. Martin has taught me a lot about tuning and the difference in heads and sticks. I foolishly thought all drums, heads and sticks were alike.  Silly me, I used to think all drum teachers were the same.  I see Martins passion and expertize and realize that he's very different to some of cowboys who I used to run in to." (Tustin).

"GREAT!!!  Martin not only teaches me, but I remember how on on first session, he set up the drums for me, changed the heads and also tuned them. His patience with my 7 year old is wonderful. My little guy developed a love for drumming seeing Martin teaching me.  Martin added him to his roster!! He laughs and jokes and has a wonderful way. He is so patient. Drumming is fun." (Laguna Naguel).

"The fact that Martin can coach my 16 year old, mad crazy high school 'rock star' is in's self a miracle.  My son has stayed with it, he is focused and dedicated.  My son actually looks forward to him (martin) coming over and coaching him. They work on his favorite songs.  The point is, my sons' interest is there, he is stimulated.  Drums have become such a huge part of his life and have helped him at school. Though Martin is a drum teacher, he is also a mentor." (Mission Viejo).

"I happen to be part of Martin Fullard's roster. I am coached by Martin @ my lock out in Santa Fe Springs every week. I am also a drum teacher.  I have to be honest, I never realized how drum teachers were SUPPOSED to be until I started getting serious coaching by Martin. I mean, I used to think it was all snare drum and rudiment work. Sure, I held my sticks trad, I though I could teach others. Well I do teach others and I play in a band. Fact is, Martin has changed my drumming. He saw areas of weakness in my drumming that I didn't think imaginable. He alway coaches in such a positive way and never pulls me down or makes me feal inferior. His indepth know-how is incredible. He has covered areas of my drumming that I didn't know existed. His attitude is always professional. So refreshing given the industry we're in.  His techniques are indeed helping me in my teaching.  Although I would never have said that I was a 'cowboy' I do admit that since Martin has been coaching me I have come to realize that I was very limited in my styles, knowledge and standard." (Whittier).

I remember Martin when he worked as the senior drum guy at Inner City Music Program.  They're thay used to teach drums to kids who had been impacted by gangs and drugs. I also remember what a positive alternate Martin brought to the table. I remember his passion and commitment.  He taught me from the get-go the basics but also told me not to be limited by my mentality,  thinking and creativity. He saw in me potential, potential and more potential. I think big and my drumming IS big. I just love the guy.  I'm now also playing timbales and other forms of latin.  My drumming has just grown and grown. (Paramount).

"Other drum teachers just went over really baby stuff with my 9 year old.  Not even beats, just going over like tribal stuff. It was as if they wouldn't take his love for drumming seriously.  Martin came over at brought him to life. Now he rocks out and plays beats.  I can't keep him off the drums."(Villa Park).

"Couple drum teachers did him harm, school band didn't help.  Martin saw the potential and went with it.  My son is amazing." (Orange).

"My daughter just loves to buzz them rolls.  Thanx Marty-you do rock-dude." (Anaheim Hills).

"Now I know what a pocket is and how to find it,and STAY in it!!!" (Norwalk).

Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me with the drumming at church. Everybody has noticed a huge difference xoxo." (Fountain Valley).

Martin's help with the Muse tracks and help with some odd time signatures has been awesome. There were some 7/8 stuff that was a nightmare, Marty nailed it." (Cypress).

"
My shredding is shredding, gracious Mr F." (Stanton).

"
Not just his coaching! guys, lets talk about his advice.  He's so practical and approachable.  I count the seconds 'til our next session!!!!!! (Lake Forest).

"He gives you the tools to nail it.  He coaches you so that you can hear 'where the 1' falls, he coaches you so you can play by music and feel.  He coaches you that you can play randomly.  I now get improvisation."  (Compton).

"Ska, Reggae, jazz, you name it, we rock it up." (Lakewood).
